Having an accident, illness or injury is not something we normally think about. However, on top of the obvious physical and mental effects of being unwell, not being able to work could put you and your family under serious financial strain.

If you can’t work, you are likely to find that your income reduces or stops altogether, whether from your own practice, the NHS or sick pay from your employer. Your bills and other financial commitments, on the other hand, won’t. This is where income protection comes in, by helping to replace the income you lose by not being able to work.

Whether you are young or old, single or with a family - income protection can give you the financial support you and your family need so that you can concentrate on your recovery, however long that may be.

Our plans are designed by experts working closely with dental professionals, just like you. So you can be sure that whatever stage your career is at, we have a plan to suit your lifestyle and needs. Our business is based on the simple principle that our members should never have to compromise on levels of service or the quality of their cover.

Being owned and run by dental professionals, we do not make profits for anyone else – our profits are only ever used to improve the products, services and benefits we provide our members.

Whether your needs are simple or complex, we are confident that you will find a plan that is right for you, whatever your budget.

Simon qualified  four years ago. Since completing his degree, he has worked in general practice.  Simon and his young family recently moved to Sussex where he started work in a small mixed practice.

On a friend’s suggestion Simon bought a short term protection policy last year which paid benefits for up to two years on any claim. However, Simon and his partner were concerned about the effect of a long term illness on the household finances and he chose Dentists’ Provident for his long term income protection needs. He chose the Select income protection plan as he wanted flexible and high quality cover with the peace of mind of having guaranteed premium rates.

Simon earns £45,000 a year and has gone for the maximum cover based on his income of £2,375 a month. He chose a waiting period of two years, which meant that his benefits from Dentists’ Provident would start immediately after his short term insurance policy stopped paying benefits on a long term claim.

Since Simon was worried about a long term illness, he chose his plan to end when he was 65 years old and for his cover to be linked to inflation.

He pays a monthly premium of £44.68 for his cover.

Ruth qualified two years ago. She now works at two surgeries as a self-employed dental hygienist. Ruth joined Dentists’ Provident in her final year. After a friend’s dental career ended because of a small DIY accident involving their thumb, Ruth has decided to buy additional income protection cover to make sure her lifestyle is covered if she could not work because of an illness or injury.

Ruth earns £60,000 a year. As she already has cover of £1,750 under her Foundation protection plan, she has decided to take out an additional monthly cover of £1,250 under the Select income protection plan. Her combined cover under the two plans means that Ruth now has the maximum cover available based on her current income.

Ruth also took the option to increase her cover in the future without medical assessment to address her worries about the effects of changes in her future health on her ability to buy more cover, in case her income grew in the future.

Ruth pays £56.02 in total for the cover under her two plans.

Sally is 45 years old and a keen hill walker. On her colleagues’ recommendation she took out her income protection plan with Dentists’ Provident last year. As Sally is planning to stop work in her early 50s to move to Spain, so she felt she did not want a long term income protection cover.

She now works in a practice in the Wirral, and was pleased that she chose the Essential protection plan as she was paid over £3,000 in benefits last summer, when she twisted her ankle during a trek.

Salman is 40 years old.

He has two young children and is usually busy juggling his personal and professional commitments. But the last few years have been different; last year he went back to work after taking an entire summer off due to problems with his knee, which meant he was in too much pain to work. As he had made sure his income protection cover was up to date, he still received an income of £4,200 a month to fund his family's lifestyle.
